To provide optimum care and extra nourishment for your lips, you can try on my DIY recipe of homemade lip balm with peppermint. I’ve created a copy cat of the famous DR Browner peppermint lip balm with beeswax, avocado oil, jojoba oil, hemp seed oil and of course peppermint essential oil.

Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm

I am a big fan of Dr. Browner products, especially that amazing lavender liquid soap. My recipe uses the same ingredients to Dr. Browner’s peppermint lip balm recipe, but not exactly the same ratio since I don’t have their recipe, obviously!

There is no doubt that their lip balm is of great quality, but it also costs about $7, whereas my recipe will cost you only a quarter of the price.

Plus, if you are beggining to make DIY products at home, making your own lip balm is as eaasy and melt and pour. You can’t mess that up!

Instructions

  • Melt beeswax, oils in a double boiler on low heat. If you do not have a double boiler, simply use an aluminum bowl placed in a pan filled with warm water.
  • Once melted, add the peppermint essential oil. Mix well.
  • Pour immediately into the lip balm containers.
  • If it has already starting to harden, don’t panic! Put it back into the double boiler for a few seconds until it melts again and pour the rest the containers.
  • Let it cool for 2 hours until it has completely solidified.
  • Apply on your lips as often as needed!
  • The shelf life of this peppermint lip balm is about 1 year, depending on the shelf life of the oils and you have used. It does not need to be refrigerated.
  • Yield: about 1.5 oz (7 lip balm containers).

Ingredients for my Homemade Lip Balm with Peppermint

Like grapeseed oil, Avocado oil is an amazing ingredient for lip balms since it acts as a protective layer and keeps the lips soft and hydrated. Adding castor oil, a few vitamin E drops or even Cocoa butter to your lip balm recipe will work wonders on chapped lips.

Beeswax a soothing substance extracted by bees that has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. It is deeply moisturizing since it contains natural emulsifiers that retain moisture. Also, it helps prevent cold sores and other infections.

Jojoba oil is another amazing addition to a DIY homemade lip balm recipe as it locks in the moisture, leaving the lips supple and soft. This waxy oil protects the lips from wind and cold, while its soothing properties help with chapped and cracked lips. It pairs amazingly with beeswax for lip balms.

Hemp seed oil is high in linoleic acid and Omega fatty acids. These two ingredients are key for cellular health, and make up the outer layer of skin. Hence hemp seed oil lip balms protect the lips from daily pollution, keeping them soft and nourished.

Peppermint essential oil’s amazing healing and soothing properties protect your lips from extensive damage while also soothing any irritation. It will provide a fresh and tingling sensation on your lips!

My Favorite Lip Balm Tubes

Now that you have ample knowledge of the key ingredients that go into making an amazing lip balm, here is a product from Amazon that I love to have at home when making a lip balm:

This product will make it easy for you to store your supply of chapsticks once you have made the above recipe. It costs $19.95, and contains 50 Clear Lip Balm containers, along with a spatula and a filling tray. They are easy to fill and you will never run out of your own supply of homemade, allergy-free lip balms. The containers can even be used as Lip gloss Sun Screen Sticks. The product is FDA approved and BPA free. You can buy these lip balm containers on amazon here.

If you want to take your lip balm to the next level, you can use those bamboo lip balm containers,

There are made of natural bamboo with safe and high-quality PP material, non-toxic and no odor. They are more expensive than plastic lip balm containers but they will certainly make a big difference in how your homemade product and lip balm is perceived.

It’s not because you are making something homemade, that it means cheap and low quality. Quite the contrary,  my homemade lip balm uses top quality and for the most part organic ingredients so you only get the very best on your lips!

Top 5 Essential Oils for Lip Balms

Essential oils have wide-ranging therapeutic benefits for the skin as well as the body, so there is no reason to believe that they are not beneficial for your lips. In fact, here are the top five essential oils for lip balm (in no particular order):

  1. Peppermint Essential Oil

The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in peppermint essential oil are perfect for treating cracked and chapped lips. Additionally, the presence of menthol in the oil soothes the lips, leaving them plump and nourished. Even if you do not have a lip balm or chapstick, you can apply a few drops of this oil with coconut oil (carrier oil) a few times a day.

  1. Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary carries amazing ingredients that protect skin cells from severe damage caused by free radicals. Hence, the rosemary essential oil will leave your lips looking moisturized, plump and beautiful. While it is frequently used topically, rosemary essential oil can often cause irritation. Therefore, eyes, mucous membranes and other sensitive skin areas should be avoided.

  1. Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Sweet orange essential oil is widely recognized as a massage oil, but the benefits are not just limited to the skin. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of this oil help keep your lips soothed and increase their ability to absorb vitamin C. Ultimately, what you get are fresh and plump lips.

  1. Cardamom Essential Oil

Cardamom essential oil is rich in vitamin C, and helps in the detoxification of the skin. Most lip balms use a blend of rich and creamy butter and cardamom essential oil to leave your lips moisturized, happy and scented, making it an aphrodisiac.

  1. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender,  is packed with antioxidants that help nourish and protect the skin, making it a magical skincare formula. It works well to restore chapped lips. It also helps bring sunburnt lips back to their original state. Mixing it with coconut oil makes it a perfect lip balm for chapped lips.

I made this. Turned out great but I’m a little confused because mine turned out very green in color and the pictures do not portray that… it’s the hemp seed oil. Feels great on your lips though!

I’ve used a refined hemp seed oil if you used unrefined hemp oil, the color is dark to clear light green in color.
