The truth about LUSH

Are you sitting down? (obviously, you are!).

Are you ready to hear the truth about Lush?

Lush “believes in making effective products from fresh organic fruits and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics.”

REALLY?

well lets see.. .here are the ingredients of the Sweetie Pie Shower Jelly:

POLYETHYLENE (what they call iridescent glitter!): Polyethylene is a polymer of ethylene monomers; may contain potentially toxic manufacturing contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane.*

METHYLPARABEN: Methylparaben is in the paraben family of preservatives used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors.

PROPYLPARABEN: Propylparaben is in the paraben family of preservatives used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Cancer: One or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results, RTECS®– Mutation Research 2008.*

FD&C BLUE 1, FD&C RED 33 : FD&C Blue 1 is a synthetic dye produced from petroleum. This ingredient may be derived from animals. From PETA’s Caring Consumer: Pigments from animal, plant, and synthetic sources used to color foods, cosmetics, and other products. Cochineal is from insects. Widely used FD&C and D&C colors are coaltar (bituminous coal) derivatives that are continuously tested on animals due to their carcinogenic properties. Alternatives: grapes, beets, turmeric, saffron, carrots, chlorophyll, annatto, alkanet.*

PROPYLENE GLYCOL: Propylene glycol is a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent. It has been associated with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis as well as contact urticaria in humans; these sensitization effects can be manifested at propylene glycol concentrations as low as 2%. Classified as expected to be toxic or harmful by the Environment Canada Domestic Substance List.  Cancer: One or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results. RTECS®– Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica, Section A, Supplement 1981. *

Other Natural ingredients: Cherry infusion, coconut infusion, carrageenan Extract, bergamot oil, Cassis absolute, cypress oil.

So you wonder why they use those harmful chemicals?

There are several reasons:

  • The shelve life of the product would be reduced to only a few months instead of years.
  • They would lose a lot of money with unsold products in all their retails stores if they had to restock every few months.
  • Using natural and organic quality product is expensive  so they only use very little of it to reduce the cost of the product and to have a better margin. Chemicals are cheap…
  • Some of the chemicals  used produce lots of foam and consumers have been brainwashed thinking that whatever foam cleans.
  • These chemicals have been used since the creation of said products, 1938, and have been “grandfathered” into use by the FDA, with no new laws introduced since then…

Conclusion:  read labels, inform yourself, be a smart consumer and start making your own beauty products at home!

Remember that your skin is the largest organ in the body; what you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.
