Pure Chai – Organic Essential Oil Blend – Natural Perfume Recipe

A common misconception is that homemade beauty products simply aren’t as pretty or don’t smell as nice as conventional ones. I don’t agree! Who said you could not use natural products and still smell divine?! This essential oil blend perfume recipe with cinnamon, cardamom, sweet orange and clove essential oils proves just that.

With its warm and sensual scent, this essential oil blend is one of my favorite perfume for winter and evenings out.

And unlike your average store-bought perfume, it actually has health benefits! Cinnamon and clove are warming, invigorating and known to improve lymph circulation. These herbs also have aphrodisiac properties. Cardamom elevates mood. Clove can help to relieve pain and has a lovely spicy scent.

This organic essential oil blend is also a very good remedy for stomach pain or cramps due to digestion. I hope you enjoy my creation for beauty or medicine!

Blending Essential Oils 101

When blending essential oils, you want to be mindful of how they play together. Certain scents compete for attention so instead, you want to choose oils that blend together well. The way to do this is to pay attention to the top, middle and base notes.

The dilution in a carrier oil for essential oil perfume is 15% to 20%.

A top note is the first note that hits your nose when you smell a blend or even an individual oil. They tend to be lighter scents (think citrus) that travel faster. A middle note is what hits your nose next, while a base note is an underlying scent that you arrive at after a little bit of time. (Mind you, this all happens really fast, so pay attention!)

Each individual oil has a top, middle and base note, but each individual oil will more of one particular note. This makes the oil a top, middle or base note. You don’t want to blend too many of one kind of oil together, or they will compete. Best practice is to have one of each. If you double up in a category, then you just need to make sure the two top notes, for example, complement each other well.

Essential oil blend

Base notes

Cinnamon leaf essential oil is made from the leaf of the cinnamon tree. It has a sweet, spicy scent that lends itself to a top or middle note category depending on the other oils you blend it with. Cinnamon essential oil has a host of health benefits. Used aromatically, it may reduce blood pressure. Topically it is a natural antifungal and antibacterial oil and also reduces inflammation. Make sure you use cinnamon leaf essential oil and not the cinnamon bark essential oil as it is too irritant.

Middle note

Clove stem essential oil is made from the stem (not the bud) of the clove evergreen tree. It has a delicious, spicy scent and functions as a middle note. Topically, it helps to relieve inflammation and alleviate pain. It’s also an immune system booster and boosts heart health!

Word of wisdom: Sweet orange essential oil is phototoxic, do not apply on skin before sun exposure.

Cardamom essential oil is made from the seeds of the cardamom plant. It has a distinctly fruity and spicy fragrance that actually emerges as the base note of this blend. It is known to promote a good mood and high spirits, and also helps to ease digestive and respiratory health.

Top note

Sweet orange essential oil is made from the oil in orange peels. This is a top note scent with a playful citrusy aroma. It also blends well with warm, spicy scents, making it perfect for this winter or evening perfume blend. Sweet orange essential oil is energizing when inhaled, and topically it has a high antioxidant effect which is brightening and anti-aging to the skin.
