I created this natural lip gloss recipe in October where you can find lots of fresh cranberries at your local market. But you can just use 100% cranberry juice instead, no need to juice the fresh cranberries. I’ve used beeswax, castor oil and shea butter as main ingredients, always organic of course!

This lipgloss recipe with cranberry is  easy to make, shiny and hydrating. You will love the tart, citrusy, lemony taste!

Going natural for your lip gloss is a great choice because we actually end up ingesting most of what we put on our lips. Avoid consuming harmful chemicals and preservatives by making your own lip gloss recipe with cranberry.

Dangerous ingredients lurking into your commercial lip gloss

Propylparaben is a type of paraben that has been linked to liver toxicity and disruption of the endocrine system. It mimics estrogens in the body which can lead to hormonal health issues ranging from PMS to endometriosis, and some reproductive cancers.

Methylparaben is another type of paraben that has been linked to birth defects. Its widely used as a preservative but it has been linked to breast cancer.

Fragrance is usually a code word used in place of phthalates and other synthetic chemicals. This is an unregulated term, so it is hard to know exactly what it is standing in for, but the beauty product watchdog agency Skin Deep sites it as being an irritant for skin, eyes and lungs, as well as potentially linked to organ toxicity.

Petrolatum is a chemical derived from the oil-petroleum industry, which has also been associated with organ toxicity.

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are known as ‘butylated compounds’ and have been linked to skin irritation and reproductive disorders. You definitely do not want these things on your lips!

Natural Ingredients Lip gloss recipe with cranberry

Organic beeswax  is made from bee honeycomb. It is a natural emollient and humectant, which makes it ideal for hydrating parched lips. To buy the best product, be sure to select one that is 100% beeswax with no additives.  So, I always recommend getting beeswax that is certified organic by a trusted third party.

Organic shea butter is a nut butter made from the fruits of the African shea tree. It has long been used as a moisturizer due to its high fatty acid content. Also, it high in the antioxidant vitamin E which helps it to smooth skin and have an anti-aging effect. Again, look for a 100% shea butter product that is certified organic by a third party.

Organic castor oil is made from castor seeds. It’s a vegetable oil with a natural shine that makes it perfect for lip gloss. It’s a great alternative to petrolatum, which is the chemical derived from gasoline oil used in most commercial lip gloss brands. Finally, check your ingredients to make sure that the castor oil you buy has no extra additives.

Organic cranberry juice is a fruit juice that I’m sure most of you are familiar with! It is high in antioxidants, which will keep your lips looking young. It also adds its color and a nice, tart taste! Most importantly, look for 100% pure cranberry juice, the more highly concentrated the better.

To avoid this lip gloss spoling too easily, you can use dried freeze cranberry instead.

Peppermint essential oil is an oil distilled from the peppermint herb. This adds a fresh, minty taste and also serves as a natural preservative due to its natural anti-microbial properties. When purchasing your peppermint oil, make sure there are no other ingredients on the label.

You can buy all those ingredients on Amazon by clicking on the link of the name of each ingredient.

How to add taste and scent to your Natural Lip Gloss Recipe

For an extra boost, you can add different flavor extract or essential oils to create different flavors or scents.

In addition to or in place of the peppermint essential oil, you can use natural flavor extracts like vanilla, coffee, chestnut or strawberry.

Just remember that the peppermint adds a little preservative boost that not all other flavors will have!

  • Hi Eve,
Love your website. I was wondering if the self life is longer, if you use the 100% pure cranberry juice? and what if you use
raw beets blended no water added and add a few drops of that for the color, I did this in the fall for a lip tint, but it had to be refrigerated because you added a little bite of water and I would only keep it for about a week. Any information would be great. Love this lipgloss.
    Thanks,
    Ann

    • Hi Ann, thanks for your kind words, means a lot to me!
it still needs to be refrigerated because you use water content (cranberry juice or fresh juice from the beets)
BUT you could try to use beetroot powder as it has no water content. That's actually something I've been planning on trying so stay tuned :-)

  • Hi
This looks great idea...having put in Cranbree juice in it what would the shelf life of such a lip stick ?
    Thanks you articles are great

    • Hi James, if you put cranberry juice, you would need to keep it in the fridge and use within the week.
