How to make a homemade face serum?

It is really simple and easy… All you need to do is combine a blend of essential oils and a carrier oil!

You need to make your choice carefully when it comes to essential oils and also carrier oils because each oil has different characteristics and accompany different benefits for your skin. Remember to NEVER use undiluted essential oils on your skin as it can burn and irritates it.

Is it Safe to Use Oil on My Face?

Advertising has made homemade recipes look bad while all commercial and synthetic formulas are shown as the best choice. Against all marketing tactics that scare you to use an oil-based formula on your face, you can rest assured that this DIY face serum has amazing benefits for your skin, as long as you use the right carrier oil.

Which Carrier Oils Should I Avoid Using on My Face?

All of the carrier oils mentioned below are comedogenic, and hence, are not suitable for acne-prone skin:

  • Coconut Oil It tends to clog pores and makes the skin look even more oily – making it almost impossible to ignore!
  • Flax Seed Oil – It is not harsh on the skin, but it needs to be mixed with a lightweight moisturizer before applying it on the skin.
  • Marula Oil – It contains a high content of capric acid, which can clog pores.
  • Red Palm Oil – This also contains a high content of capric acid, leading to clogged pores.
  • Soy Bean Oil – Soy Bean oil is heavy and has a high comedogenic rating and can be a nightmare for acne prone skin.
  • Wheat Germ Oil – It contains ingredients that can irritate the skin causing it to produce more oil, resulting in acne.

What does comedogenic mean?

Comedogenic literally means “tending to cause blackheads by blocking the pores of the skin.” Therefore, it is always recommended to go for carrier oils that are labeled as non-comedogenic. I will give you a few options below!

homemade face serum oily skin

Face Serum Ingredients for Oily Skin and Their Benefits

  • Jojoba Oil Helps moisturize your skin and regulates oil production. It contains sebum that oily skin generates naturally, but Jojoba tricks the skin into believing that it has produced enough, hence regulating oil secretion.
  • Grapeseed Oil The high linoleic acid content helps reduce clogged pores, and ultimately reduces the natural oil content. It also balances both, the oily and dry skin patches.

Essential oil blend for oily skin

  • Ylang Ylang Essential Oil It balances oil production and relaxes the skin.
  • Patchouli Essential Oil It possesses amazing acne treating and oil-balancing properties. It also helps reduce scars, which may appear overtime due to clogged pores.
  • Lavender Essential Oil Its anti-inflammatory and healing properties help in toning the skin and treating acne. It also helps reduce excessive oil secretion.

Hello, I have been looking for a serum for my skin. I have been researching and came across your page! So my skin is normally dry in the winter and oily in the summer, which serum do you recommend I try?

Hi Dominique, glad you found me! You can cater to your skin needs depending on the season, jojoba oil is a favorite of mine, so use the “Homemade face serum for normal and mature skin” but skip the rosehip oil.

An update: After about 6 weeks of using this face serum (following your instructions for washing my face with water, rose hydrosol, and then applying the serum), my skin is noticeably improved! The stubborn patch of dry skin I’ve had on my chin for a year is gone, my acne/ingrown hair scars are healing, my skin tone is not red or inflamed anymore, and I haven’t had a single ingrown hair! I’ve struggled with ingrown hairs on my chin for years. My facial skin is looking calm, healthy, and moisturized. Thank you so much for your informative blog, simple recipes, and lack of unnecessary additives in your recipes. So much appreciated!

    hello
Please help me. I’m 60 years old. I have dry skin on my cheek. I have wrinkles and I have sagging skin. Years appropriate. What kind of cream and serum should I do to reduce my wrinkles and tighten my skin on my face.
    thanks , Karmen

I have brown spots I would like to get rid of as well as precancerous spots on my face which usually get burned off at the dermatologist. Could I add white willow bark extract to the above formula for night time use? Anything else you would recommend to diminish brown spots? Maybe Calendula extract?

Hey! Thanks for posting such helpful information. Curious on your thoughts regarding grapefruit seed oil and carrot seed oil being incorporated into facial serum. (Both carrier Not essential oil.) most information online is regarding the essential oils of them. Thanks so much
