Making your own DIY eye makeup remover is super easy and requires 3 ingredients: shea butter, camellia seed oil and chamomile flower water (hydrosol) and can be done in 5 to 10 minutes. This is a great homemade eye makeup remover recipe for sensitive eyes, all natural and organic. Best of all, my recipe only takes 10 minutes to make and is cost effective. Now, you have no more excuses not to make your own eye make up remover.
The eye area is especially sensitive, so greening your entire cosmetic and skincare routine for this area of your self-care regimen is important! Commercial makeup removers contain chemicals that you may not want on your skin, let alone near your eyes – and can also be harsh and be drying to the skin. You can also use my homemade makeup remover on your entire face if foundation or lipstick.
In fact, according to the EWG’s cosmetic watchdog Skin Deep, many commercial eye makeup removers, especially oil-free varieties, contain compounds like phenoxyethanol, that are known eye irritants. It does seem a bit counterintuitive to apply eye irritants to the eye area, right? Even oil-based commercial eye makeup removers include toxic ingredients such as synthetic fragrance and preservatives. Best to stear clear of it!
Not only can this damage the delicate skin in this area, but it can make you look older or tired! No thank you – instead, you can make this DIY eye makeup remover with only three nourishing ingredients that boost skin health and leave you looking radiant.
DIY eye makeup remover
To remove mascara, eyeliner and other eye makeup, you need an oil (or grease) to help dissolve the compounds that bind the makeup to your skin and eyelashes. Oils are able to do this naturally on their own so that you do not need added chemicals or detergents. Many also have natural antiseptic properties that make them especially suited to cleansing the skin and eyelashes.
Makeup formulas are either water-soluble or oil-soluble. Most long-wearing makeups are oil-soluble – this is what gives them staying power – but some makeup may contain water-soluble compounds. Adding a little bit of water to the mixture makes sure that both oil-soluble and water-soluble formulas are removed, although most of the time, oil alone will do the trick!
Homemade Eye makeup remover
My DIY eye makeup remover has only three ingredients, contains no soap, and will not sting at all! These three ingredients are easy to find, and you’re able to buy them cheaply in larger containers so that you can add them to your homemade beauty arsenal for less than it costs to buy a commercial makeup remover and your other skincare products.
Ingredients to make your own eye makeup remover
Shea butter is made from the nut of the Shea tree, which is native to Africa. It is naturally soothing, and due to its highly emollient properties, it can remove even the toughest makeup. It’s also naturally anti-aging due to its fatty acid content.
Camelia seed oil is derived from the seeds of the edible camelia plant, from China. It is rich in Omega-6 fatty acids and antioxidants that help to nourish the skin.
Chamomile flower water or hydrosol is derived from chamomile flowers. It is naturally calming due to the types of naturally occurring esters and alcohols in the plant. Chamomile water is nourishing to the skin, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic – making it great for this eye makeup remover. Of course, always choose organic USDA or ecocert ingredients to best quality.
I’m not adding any essential oils to this DIY eye makeup remover recipe since we are working with the eyes area.
Add the shea butter and camelia seed oil in an aluminum bowl.
2. Mix the shea butter and camelia seed oil with a hand blender until smooth.
3. Add the 2 tablespoons of the chamomile flower water one spoon at a time and mix well with the hand blender until smooth and well combined. You will have a smooth cream, like a lotion.
4. Pour the cream into glass containers. The cream will become thicker as it sets after a few hours.
