This homemade, vegan and easy-to-make coffee face scrub recipe is similar than the Cup O’ Coffee scrub from Lush BUT minus the chemical fragrance, the talc, and a few other ingredients like vetiver and vanilla essential oils that can actually make your skin sensitive and irritated (plus the exorbitant price for a tiny jar!). My coffee face scrub recipe is easy to make with only 3 ingredients: coffee, kaolin clay, and organic agave nectar

Not only is coffee an effective energizer in the morning but it is one of the best skin exfoliators for your beauty routine.

While you can practically buy a coffee face scrub in beauty stores like lush, the problem with commercialized beauty products is that they lean more on the deceitful marketing than the genuine benefits. Moreover, since it’s already a gargantuan brand, their prices may not be something you can afford daily. Lush’s Cup O’ Coffee face and body mask is a very popular product and if you’re already spending the money on drinking organic coffee and is now thinking of a perfect alternative to still have your caffeine beauty routine continuous.

What’s hiding in the “fragrance” ingredient?

Perhaps one of the downsides of commercialized coffee scrubs is that they use artificial coffee (and other ingredients) scent. Synthetic scents like fragrances are proven to contribute to triggering a whole array of diseases from common allergies to cancer. They also give me instant headaches!

The three main ingredients of this recipe are organic agave syrup, kaolinite clay, and ground coffee beans. Here are the benefits of the three:

  • Agave Nectar. Agave nectar is not only a good alternative to commercialized white sugar but also has great skin benefits. It helps soothe irritated skin as a gentle exfoliant and reduce the appearance of acne and blemishes as it breaks down dead skin cells. It also has anti-aging power that smoothens your skin, making it soft and prevents the appearance of early-onset wrinkles. Always choose organic agave nectar to ensure you have no pesticides or insecticide int he final product. Alternatively, you can use maple syrup

  • Kaolinite Clay. Kaolin clay origins from China and have thousands of years of history of uses. Just like agave nectar, kaolinite clay exfoliates the skin thereby making it soft and supple and younger looking. It is also perfect for oily skin as it absorbs excess oil but still maintaining it moisturized throughout the day.

  • Ground Coffee. Not only can coffee instantly pique your mood up in the morning but it is a brightening ingredient for the skin making it look refreshing. Coffee is rich in antioxidants that prevent premature aging and is also good for achieving that silky smooth complexion. Another fun fact, coffee is perfect for getting rid of cellulite so you can put some on other body areas!

  • Apply directly to the face and massage gently for a few minutes in small circular motions.
  • Rinse well with lukewarm water and apply your daily DIY moisturizer.
  • You may store the leftovers in a small container for a few weeks as long as there is no contamination with water.

How often should you use this homemade coffee scrub on your face?

While face scrubs are great for the skin, its ability to exfoliate your skin is not a good idea when done more than once a week. Doing it only once a week is enough to make your skin healthy and keep the sebum balance on your skin. Otherwise, you may end up disrupting the fragile balance of your skin and end up with acne.

How long does this face scrub last?

Since we’re using all-natural ingredients, this coffee scrub can’t last for too long. You should make a fresh batch every few weeks. Also, to keep it from spoiling earlier, avoid getting water content mixed in your coffee scrub so put in an airtight container to avoid mold buildup.

It is also best to use a clean and dry spoon to get the scrub you need and to avoid bacteria contamination with your hands.

its best to use fresh ground coffee beans without brewing them, otherwise you will include water in your scrub and it would spoil more easily.
