DIY Face Masks With Honey

If there’s one ingredient that I can call my absolute favourite, it’s honey. I’m not just talking about its quality of sweetening anything in the kitchen or how it can help soothes a sore throat – in fact, I’m talking about the wonders it can do in the skincare regimen!

Not only does honey has great results as a face mask, but it’s also readily available, super affordable and quite simple to create a DIY mask with. I’ve personally seen a visible difference in my skin, so hoping you will enjoy my recipe and other homemade face masks with honey from fellow bloggers.

Not everybody has the same skin type, so I’ve got a mask for all of you out there! Here are my top 3 DIY face masks with honey:

How does honey help your face?

Honey is known to have a number of benefits for the skin. Its microbial and antiseptic properties help fight against skin infections, while its anti-inflammatory properties aid with acne or even psoriasis. Plus, it contains antioxidants that can hydrate and tighten your skin, leaving it deeply nourished and glowing.

How to make a face mask with honey

It’s as simple as can be – all you need is honey, of course, along with a few other ingredients that are also easily available. A huge advantage of making a DIY face mask is how inexpensive it is, compared to commercially produced honey masks that cost a fortune and are also full of chemicals like this one from famarcy that cost a blatant $50!

How to wash your face with honey

All it requires is a teaspoon of honey! Gently massage honey on your face and leave it on for a few minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and tap your face dry with a clean towel. You can then moisturize with my favourite DIY Face Serum.

For best results, it’s recommended to use honey as a face wash once a week.

My Healing DIY face mask with honey Key Ingredients

  • Honey (make sure you get the Raw, organic and full of pollen kind! more on this below…) Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, honey is great to heal your skin, face acne scars and brighten your complexion.
  • Jojoba oil: Like honey, jojoba oil is also known to heal the skin, relieve sunburns, and treat skin conditions like acne.
  • Aloe Vera: Another great ingredient known to soothe and heal the skin, fight skin-ageing and reduce blemishes.

*Aloe Vera can be substituted with a hydrosol like rose, lemongrass or chamomile.

As for any face masks, I’d recommend doing a patch test before in case you have any reaction, before applying to your whole face.

Types of honey you can use on your face

It’s most important to make sure that whatever the type, the honey you opt for is raw, organic and unpasteurised. Other types of honey are exposed to high temperatures during processing, in order to increase its shelf-life. As a result, it destroys the beneficial enzymatic properties and antioxidants that raw honey possesses.

  • Clover Honey

Originally from New Zealand and Canada, clover honey is the most popular type of honey in America. It has strong antioxidant properties. Clover honey is floral and sweet!

Buckwheat honey is all-America, strong and dark brown in colour.

Acacia honey has recently become popular as being one of the ‘classy’ types of honey. It works wonderfully with tea and oatmeal. It is also high in flavonoids and antioxidants. Many also use it as a treatment for acne issues because of its rich antibacterial content.

In terms of antibacterial properties, Manuka honey probably takes the prize! In fact, it’s been approved by FDA as an effective treatment to heal wounds. Produced in New Zealand, it is rare and revered for its numerous health benefits.

Manuka honey is also known for how well it can tackle acne, inflammation and patients with potential cystic fibrosis.

What is the best honey you can put on your face?

All types of honey have their own distinct benefits, clover honey is full of antioxidant, manuka and acacia honey is great if you have acne. As long as the honey you choose is organic and raw, it’ll do wonders for you!

If you have allergies to pollen and bees, of course, you need to stay away from honey.

Which honey you should avoid in DIY Face masks?

The FAKE kind! Make sure the honey you’re buying is organic and unpasteurised. It’s likely that the honey you find in big supermarkets is mass-produced, filtered, cut with corn syrup and lacks the benefits.

Which honey to buy and how to avoid fakes?

According to Food Safety News, up to 76%of the honey sold in the U.S is fake.

But worry not I come bearing good news! Here are a few of my favourites that are 100% organic honey:

  1. The Y.S Eco Bee Farms Raw Honey
  2. Honey Gardens Apitherapy Raw Honey (this one tastes exceptionally good too!)
  3. Really Raw Honey Energy Snack

Other than these options, I always try to buy local honey from the farmers market when I can. Not only am I guaranteed high-quality honey, but I also get a chance to support local beekeepers, too!

The Water Test

This is a great way to test the authenticity of honey. Real honey doesn’t mix readily with water, so this test is based on this theory.

Drop a teaspoon of honey into a glass of water and see if it settles or not. Real honey needs to be stirred to be incorporated into water. If the honey dissolves easily into the water without needing to be stirred, throw it away because you know you have been pawned!

Homemade Turmeric and honey face mask recipe

This is a great mask for healing acne or rosacea that I found on https://dearcrissy.com/ . It requires just a teaspoon of turmeric mixed with a teaspoon of honey. An optional ingredient is coconut oil, but I would prefer using jojoba oil since coconut oil can be comedogenic! Here is  the full homemade honey face mask recipe with turmeric!

Word of caution

This mask will stain clothes and skin. For your skin, do a gentle wash and then wipe with a cotton pad soaked witch hazel to remove the yellow hue.

Oat and honey face mask recipe for dry skin

If you struggle with dry skin, this is the oat and honey face mask recipe that’ll save you and that I found on https://kaleandcaramel.com/! This mask will gently exfoliate, get rid of dead cells and reveal glowing, soft skin. All you need is oat flour, honey, apple cider vinegar, and rosewater.

Here’s the full recipe.

Can you wash your face with honey?

Of course! As long as the honey is raw and unpasteurized. It’s recommended to use honey as a face wash once a week and not more so you do not disrupt the sebum balance on your skin.

What can you mix with honey to make a face mask?

Ingredients such as yoghurt and milk can work well with honey to make a homemade face mask.

I’ve also seen recipes recommending lemon juice and baking soda, but I would recommend you to stay away from it. Personally, I find them too harsh and it can lead to redness and irritation.

If you do want to try it, it’s always better to do a patch test before applying it to your whole face. Better safe than sorry!

How do you make a homemade face mask without honey?

While honey is great, it’s not the only ingredient that can be used to make a mask. There are plenty of other options out there which can be equally beneficial for your skin. Take a look at my DIY charcoal mask and clay mask for acne.
