Nothing feels more luxurious on the skin than a good shea butter body cream! You don’t have to buy toxin-laden conventional beauty products for a spa like experience. This natural shea butter cream recipe is super moisturizing and ideal for use on both the face and body!

Coconut oil is a great oil for general moisturizing and serves as a protective layer, helping to retain the moisture in your skin. It also acts as a mild oil suitable for those with inflamed and irritated skin, and those with skin sensitivities.

Jojoba Oil is very similar to the natural oil our skin produces, though it is technically a liquid wax produced from the seed of the Jojoba simmondsia chinensis shrub.

Best known for its ability to calm and ease the overly anxious, Chamomile hydrosol also has a true floral scent and is great to use in any cream. This shea butter cream recipe is nourishing to the skin and ultra hydrating.

Can I mix coconut oil with shea butter?

Coconut oil and shea butter are two powerhouse moisturizing oils that are commonly used in hydrating products. You don’t often see them together because their molecules are of different sizes so they do not blend well. But, if you use an emulsifying agent and blend thoroughly, you can combine the two and you don’t have to worry!

Beeswax is a great natural emulsifier that also has its own skin-boosting benefits, so you can trust that you can harness the power of these two oils naturally.

Is shea butter good for face moisturizer?

Shea butter is a rich nut butter, so many people wonder if it is good for use on the face. The use of oils on the face is actually less determined by richness, and more my absorption rate. Shea butter is actually a medium-absorption rate oil – not a slow-absorbing oil like many people assume – so in small quantities, it is absolutely good to use on your face. And why not go for it when it has so many healing properties to offer?!

Shea Butter Cream Recipe Ingredients

Chamomile flower water is a hydrosol made from chamomile flowers. Chamomile is naturally soothing and anti-inflammatory.  It also reduces the appearance of redness in the skin and is soothing. Chamomile is rich in folate, vitamin A and panthothenic acid. Remember to check your ingredients to makes sure that you are buying a pure hydrosol (nothing but water and chamomile!).

Aloe vera gel is made from the gel naturally contained within the leaves of the aloe plant, found in the southwestern United States and Central America. The gel has natural healing properties, and hydrates as well as soothes and cools. It’s saponin and salicylic acid content helps to clarify, while its vitamin B12 and vitamins A, C and E restore skin health.

Jojoba oil is made from the seed of the jojoba plant, which is also found Mexico and the southwest of the United States. Its high in antioxidants A and E, which nourish and moisturize the skin along with is high fatty acid content. It’s a lightweight oil and liquid at room temperature. Blended into this shea butter cream recipe, it helps to lighten the overall texture.

Coconut oil is made from coconut kernels. It has a high fatty acid content, which makes it ultra-moisturizing. Coconut oil also has antifungal and antibacterial properties as an added benefit to skin health and it can reduce acne and inflammation. You may choose refined or raw coconut oil depending on how much coconut scent you would like in this shea butter cream.

Shea butter is made from the African shea tree. It’s a rich butter with a decent absorption rate, making it a great choice for a heavy face cream or body lotion. It has natural smoothing effects on the skin as well as anti-aging power due to its vitamin content (particularly vitamins A and E, along with minerals). You may use unrefined shea butter for the biggest health boost, but if you do not like the scent like me, you may use refined shea butter. I recommend avoiding any grade lower than Grade B.

Beeswax is a natural emulsifier, emollient and humectant made from bee honeycomb. It is hard at room temperature but helps to combine the molecules of different types of oils as its melted and reconstitutes. Beeswax helps to draw more moisture to the skin, as well as to provide a protective barrier to keep moisture in. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory and a great addition to this shea butter cream.

How do you make shea butter cream?

Its simple, you have to make an emulsion with shea butter and other oil. In this shea butter cream recipe, I’ve added chamomile flower water and aloe vera gel.

Natural Soothing Body Cream

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 2 oz

Ingredients

  • 5 teaspoons of organic Chamomile flower water
  • 5 teaspoons of organic aloe vera gel
  • 5 teaspoons of organic Jojoba Oil
  • 3 teaspoons of organic Coconut Oil refined if you do not like the scent of coconut
  • 2 teaspoons of organic and raw shea butter or organic refined shea butter if you do not like the scent of raw shea butter
  • 1 capsule of vitamin E or a few drops of wheat germ oil
  • 1 teaspoon of organic and unrefined beeswax
  • EO Optional:
  • 20 drops of organic Roman Chamomile essential oil

Instructions

  • Add all the oils and beeswax to your double boiler, or in a stainless steel bowl over a pan filled with water, on low heat.
  • Apply heat until they are melted.
  • At the same time, combine the water phase in a pan (bain marie or double boiler) on low heat (lowest possible) so that it gets to the same temperatures as the oils.
  • Stir gently to blend.
  • Once the oils are melted, take it off the heat and start whipping with an electric mixer for a few minutes, at the same time add the water spoon by spoon.
  • Your liquids will turn into a cream.
  • Add the essential oils and mix until you get the creamy consistency desired.
  • Pour into pretty containers.
  • Use within 2 months.

          you can add essential oils to have a nice smell. Did you add the roman chamomile essential oils like in the recipe?

    HI Andrea, you need to add teh beeswax to the oils in the same double boiler and wait until it is all melted before add the water phase…Its pretty simple, you will be amazed. Use stainless steel bowls rather than glass. I find it cools quicker and makes it easier to create the emulsion. Have fun!

    Does this lotion need to be refrigerated? If not, how soon would you need to use it before it went bad? Thanks!

      HI Andrea, No i don’t refrigerate this lotion, it is best to use it within two months. You can add 5 drops of grape seed extract for better preservation. Always do small batches, it takes no time to make it again anyway! Have fun!
