Once you have made my mango body butter recipe below, I think you will have trouble making anything else….This mango body butter melts right away on contact with your skin, leaving it silky smooth and not greasy. Mango butter  is a powerful and natural ingredient in body butter recipes and perfect for dry or sunburned skins. It moisturizes and nourishes the skin almost instantly and is frequently used with or as a substitute for cocoa and shea butter.

I’m sorry to disappoint you but mango butter does not smell like mangos! The reason is that the mango comes from the seed of the fruit and not the flesh of the fruit. It does have a sweet smell though! I’ve added some Roman chamomile essential oil so it gives a playful, citrusy and sweet smell to this organic mango butter recipe.

Mango Body Butter Recipe

Scientifically known as Mangifera Indica, mango butter comes from the tropical mango tree and is cold-pressed from the seeds of the mango fruit. Although you can find this fruit throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Indonesia and the Americas, it is native to India. it hardens at room temperature but will soften when you put it on your skin. It leaves a silky feeling and very smooth touch!

What I like about mango butter is that in comparison to other popular body butters, mango butter is firm, yet soft and creamy. Its smooth, light and non-greasy texture makes it easy to apply to the skin.

Benefits of Mango Body Butter

  • Treats and moisturizes dry, ashy, sensitive and rough skin
  • Minimizes the appearance of stretch marks and scars
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Soothes sun damaged skin
  • It is a natural source of vitamins A, C and E
  • Protects against UV rays
  • great to use in handmade soaps for moisture and lather

How to choose the best quality mango butter?

Ideally, you want to make sure it is certified organic by USDA or Ecocert like this mango body butter here.

Choose the raw unrefined version of mango butter as it will contain more vitamins and minerals. The trouble is that sometimes unrefined mango butter can bring some grainy texture to your body butter so if this is the case opt for a refined organic mango butter.

The way it is extracted also has an incidence on the quality. The fat is usually extracted by hydraulic pressure or by solvent extraction. Ask the manufacturer how the mango butter is extracted and avoid the solvent extraction as it can have some chemical residue.

Organic Mango Butter vs Non-Organic Mango Butter

Compared to non-organic mango butter, organic mango butter is non-toxic and free from pesticides and fertilizers. Prefer the fair trade organic mango butter so ensure the community making the mango butter receive “fair” wages and well compensated for their work.

Other ingredients I used in my organic mango body butter recipe

  • Shea butter: Shea butter comes from the fat pulled out from the nut of African Shea tree. It is rich in vitamins E, A and F – providing the skin with essential nutrients. Some of its many benefits include reducing skin inflammation, moisturizing and strengthening the skin, and reducing the signs of wrinkles.
  • Arrowroot powder: Arrowroot powder helps reduce redness and combats wrinkles. It is a great addition to body butter recipes because it moisturizes the skin without feeling greasy.
  • Safflower oil: Made from safflower seeds, safflower oil contains linoleic acid and vitamin E. It has been shown to improve skin texture and reduce the signs of aging.

This homemade mango body butter recipe is definitely cost-effective.  All you have to do is purchase your ingredients; once you do you will have enough to make a large amount – definitely more than what comes in a jar at your local store. 1 pound of store-bought mango butter will cost approximately $13.00 while 3.5 pounds may cost around $37.00.

Instructions

  • Put the shea and mango butter in a glass or metal bowl inside a pan filled with water on low heat so they starts melting slowly.
  • Once melted add the safflower oil and mix well.
  • Put the bowl the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the temperature of your freezer. You want the mixture to not be completely frozen but thick enough so it is not liquid.
  • If its a soft paste then its ready to whip!
  • Then take it out of the freezer and start whipping with an electric whip on low speed.
  • Add the arrowroot powder if desired. This is optional but will help have a light feeling and texture on the skin.
  • Make sure you wear an apron and that the bowl is deep enough so the butter does not start flying around everywhere in the kitchen!
  • Begin whipping your mixture on low speed until it becomes fluffy.
  • Once the mixture is fluffy, increase the speed to medium until it becomes whipped to the desired stage.
  • Add essential oils if desired at the end and whip for 1 min or less.
  • Your butter will have a very fluffy and light consistency, like a nice whipped cream!

Hi Eve, thanks for your amazing page. I’m thrilled to have found you.
I have one question. Can I use white kaolin clay on body butter recipe.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey Eve, Loving the recipe, i will be trying it out once my ingredients arrive, please could you tell me how many 60ml – 2oz jars would make please? As it says it makes a large batch, i wanted to buy enough jars to stock up and sell, i see you commented saying You don’t add Vitamin E oil as mango butter has a shelf life of 2 years, as a business owner do you advice adding vitamin E oil as a safety measure so they pass FDA checks?

    Hi there

Do you have the weight and the percentage of each ingredient to add to 100%. You didn’t use a preservative either which I most likely need as I use this sort of thing straight after a shower which I may still have damp/wet hands.
    Thanks

This turned out amazing. Do you know if I can substitute the mango butter with equal parts refined cocoa butter? Sometimes mango butter is hard to find.

Hi Eve! I am so excited to have found a recipe without coconut oil:). I have heard from other places that Vitamin E oil needs to be added to whipped body butters, so that they last longer. Is that true for this butter?

Also, what other oils could I replace safflower oil with (I think it’s a carrier oil, so would I just research different carrier oils)?

Thank you so much and I am excited to try this recipe!

    • January 20, 2021 / 10:00 pm

Hi Leah, to be honest, the mango butter shelf life is already 2 years so I don’t think it’s necessary to add vitamin E, I don’t bother!
The butter you will make will last as long as the shelf life of the oil/butter you use (the shortest one!)
For substitution for the safflower, jojoba oil is great!
take a look at this blog post about substitution: https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/substitutions-in-diy-beauty-products/

Hi. Can I sub grapeseed oil? I use lotion because I know my body needs it especially in the winter but I really don’t like the feeling of lotion after it’s applied because of the greasy feel. I’ve been making my own lotion with the same recipe for over a year now, and I am going to try this recipe once I use up the lotion I have. Does it give a greasy feel at all? I think the biggest culprit for the greasy feel in my current lotion is almond oil and coconut oil. Love those oils but I feel they just aren’t for me, at least in lotion. Can more arrowroot be added to ensure a less nongreasy feel? Thx a bunch!

    • December 22, 2020 / 2:34 am

yes you can use grapeseed oil but if you are looking for non greasy, would suggest trying safflower oil instead or camelia seed oil.
Don’t add too much arrowroot as it would end up being grainy!

Eve, your recipe is wonderful! I just found your site after looking at many body butter recipes. This Mango Body Butter is my first attempt at making anything in homemade skin care. The recipe has worked out perfectly on both batches I have made. Loved my first attempt so much I made a batch to share with friends. I have been stocking up on all kinds of luscious oils but was hesitant to start til I saw your recipe.
For some questions I’ve seen in the comments, here are my beginner’s luck answers. This recipe gave me about 3 cups of fluffy finished butter. I also measured the solid butters in 1/4 or 1/2 cups (4 Tbsps. to a 1/4 cup) since it was easier to scoop out. I found the recipe very forgiving. I couldn’t wait to try out some of my more exotic oils, so for the second batch I subbed the Safflower Oil with a combination of some of the luscious because I have quite dry, “mature” skin, and it still worked out beautifully. I made it a light mango/melon color with a Tbsp. of Red Palm Oil traded for one of the Safflower oil. This makes my skin feel beautiful — I can’t wait to see the longer term effects. I will be trying so many more of your tantalizing recipes! Thank you!

I subbed in a Tbsp. of Red Palm Oil for one Tbsp. of the Safflower Oil. It makes it a beautiful light mango/melon color and still whipped up beautiful and fluffy.

Thank you for sharing, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if the ingredients were weighed out to grams. Why make it so hard on yourself? It’s not easy to get onto a tablespoon, and I suspect this is why people are getting varying results.

I really want to rate this recipe but I just made it for the 1st time & it turned out soupy not creamy at all? I even went & bought the hand mixer in the picture. The only thing I did different is left out the last essential oil completely. Before I added the other 2 essential oils, I even added an extra 1/2 teaspoon of arrowroot powder? Any suggestions please?

How much carrier oil can I add if my body butter got too hard?

        • March 3, 2021 / 2:49 pm

if it got too hard and seized, its because you overmixed it. You could try to melt again and do the process again making sure you do not overmix. You could also increase the total amount of safflower oil to 12 TBS. If you want to do a test, use teaspoons for the entire recipe instead of tablespoons. so 12 teaspoons of each mango butter, shea butter, safflower oil.

I want to add color to this butter. can u please suggest the color which i can use? and the quantity??????????

    • December 4, 2018 / 7:43 pm

I don’t recommend using colors since it will be on your body but if you really wanted to, you could add 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder, that will give a slight tan.

    • Annie
      January 31, 2019 / 5:06 am

You could use mica powder to color your butters. I use aprox. 1 teaspoon per 12oz of my butters. Micas don’t stain your skin

    Hi Eve!

I searched for DIY Mango butter and landed here, but unfortunately, because I am allergic to latex, I cannot use shea butter which has similar properties. Can you think of anything else that might work as a substitute? I loath using beauty products that contain petroleum, but often have to because I am allergic to many natural ingredients like aloe and shea butter. I am desperate to find a natural skin cream that I don’t react to, so any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

Could I add a perserative to make it last longer? If yes, which one would you recommend?

    • September 17, 2018 / 11:55 pm

there is no need to add a preservative, this last about a year or more depending on the shelf life of the ingredients you are using.

    • May 8, 2020 / 12:01 pm

Silky smooth! This recipe is not greasy at all. I really enjoyed making it too. It makes a lot too. You don’t feel like you have to make this often. I used my own essential oil mix. Thank you.

My first shot at making body butter and after combing so many recipes I chose this one mainly due to the fact there is only a small amount of shea butter in it, everything was great until I added essential oils at the end, the consistency changed and I lost the light whipped whipped cream texture, it froze up, the consistency is quite difficult to get out of the jar, a spatula is needed but all in all the end product is divine when applied . What do I need to do differently? Adding the essential oils was the culprit I am 100% sure.

    • August 23, 2018 / 6:50 pm

Hi Mary, I don’t think its the essential oils but more the amount of time you whipped the shea butter. If you whip it too long it can become more solid.
I would always add the essentials oils right before whipping tho.

Do you have this recipe in grams? The butters are kind of hard to put in a measuring spoon . It takes more time to measure out 12 spoons of the mango butter, they are not the easiest thing to do with solids at least.
