Lipstick containers

I found those beautiful lipstick containers that have a silver body and cap, with glossy silver ring that looks exactly like the one you can buy at a major brand store. You can get those lipstick containers or empty tubes on Aroma Zone (they now deliver internationally from France!) or Amazon.com

When I was done with the final product in hand, I was almost as excited as when I made my first homemade face cream!

The secret to making this homemade and organic lipstick like a pro is the lipstick silicon mold!

It will give the perfect shape. This homemade lipstick recipe is not a regular lip balm recipe as there are a few steps you need to do with the silicon mold. This silicon mold has been custom made by Aroma-zone. It’s a French company that sells great quality beauty care ingredients. The only hiccup is that you most likely will have to pay a custom (tax) fee if you do not live in France.

You could also decide to get another lipstick mold I found on amazon. I have not tried this one yet but it has good reviews!

How to Make Lipstick Without Beeswax at Home?

If you’re vegan and don’t want to use beeswax, or simply don’t have it on hand at the time, fret not, for there are ways you can make an amazing lipstick without it. Alternate vegan options for beeswax include Rice Bran Wax, Candelilla wax, Carnauba Wax or Soy wax. These work just as well as beeswax, so you don’t have to worry about it affecting the quality of your end product.

Ingredients DIY Lipstick recipe

This organic recipe is without beeswax and could be a vegan lipstick recipe if you replaced the natural carmine red colorant by iron oxides.

Instead of beeswax, I’ve used rice bran wax, candelilla wax and carnauba wax.

Why so many waxes you may wonder?

It is because it will give the right creamy and thick texture. This is more suitable for color-rich lipstick. It has a soft satin and semi-matte finish and stay one for more than 5 hours.

It will moisturize your lips while showing intense color.

Rice Bran Wax comes from the cold press de-waxing of the rice bran oil. It can be used as a thickener and has emollient properties.

Candelilla wax is a wax derived from the leaves of the small Candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico.  It has great protecting properties and is an effective emollient. Plus it adds a nice gloss!

Carnauba wax comes from the leaves of the Brazilian palm tree Copernica Cerifera also referred to as the “tree of life”. It is used as a thickening agent for lipstick and if one of the hardest of natural waxes.

I chose a red carmine color but you could create your own shade by mixing 1 tsp of camelia seed oil with mica or iron oxide of your choice. I suggest mixing a very small amount of mica or iron oxides together to get the color you are looking for BEFORE you incorporate into the camellia seed oil.

Tutorial on how to use the lipstick silicon mold

Step 1

Remove the cover and the base of the lipstick container

Step 2

Turn the bottom white part of the mechanism to the maximum in order to have the transparent inner part up.

Step 3

Clip the transparent inner part in the lipstick moldhow to make your own lipstick

Step 4

Put the lipstick mold upside down on a table and start pouring through the bottom of the body of the empty case.

Step 5

Pour the melted lipstick mixture quickly inside the lipstick container. Try not to exceed the little white gate.

Step 6

Place the entire (+ mold body of the case) 15 minutes in the freezer in the same position as casting.

Step 7

To unmold, put the lipstick upright and unmold gently the silicone mold.

Step 8

Turn the mechanism to retract the lipstick stick inside the body of the container, then put the base and the cover.

Step 9

Clean the silicone mold with warm water and soap. Let dry before you use it again. Voila, you are done!

How is Lipstick Made in Factories

If you truly knew the extent of the nasty ingredients used in your beloved lipsticks, you might not feel as enthusiastic about putting it on your lips. Tests by FDA in 2012 showed that in a sample of 400 different lipsticks, lead was present in the majority in the amounts of seven parts per million!

Some of the other toxic chemicals used in lipsticks include Polyparaben, Methylparaben, Retinyl Palmitate, and Tocopheryl Acetate. A lot of dyes used are also known to contain harmful compounds like heavy metals.

You have to realize that small exposure built over a long period of time to those chemicals can have a negative impact on your health. If you’re like the average woman who wears lipstick daily and reapplies it repeatedly during the day, think of all the toxic chemicals you might be ingesting unknowingly. Investing in a natural, homemade alternative might be more crucial than you think.

How to Make Matte Lipstick?

If you’re a more matte kinda gal, you’ll be happy to know that you can achieve more or less the same matte look using a few select ingredients in your homemade lipstick that you do with your store brought one. All you need to do is add rice flour and zinc oxide to your normal lipstick mixture and proceed as you normally would. The rice flour and zinc oxide will help give your lipstick that sleek matte look. Take a look at my matte lipstick recipe here!

DIY Long Lasting Lipstick

How long a lipstick lasts on your lips depends mainly on the combo of wax that you use as its base. Also, the colorant that you use is a huge determinant too in this regard. You’ll find that a colorant like Carmine made from Cochenille (red) is especially guaranteed to make it long-lasting. Unfortunately, Carmine red dye is not a vegan option as it is made from insects!

While the longevity of your homemade lipstick obviously won’t be as great as a store bought ones, you can increase its wear time to some extent by following one simple tip. Apply your lipstick as you normally would and then powder your lips with bamboo silica (a great option you can find on Amazon is this one). What the bamboo silica powder does is that it absorbs the excess moisture, which helps lock in the color and makes it more long-lasting.

How to Make Pigmented Lipstick

Just because you’re making lipstick at home doesn’t mean that you should have to compromise on the quality and result of it. For maximum color payoff, consider using colorants like red carmine, beetroot, gremil colorant or red oxides. These will take your product pigmentation to a whole new level and help you achieve that vibrant pop of red color.

How to Make Pink Lipstick

Pink lipstick is essential in every girl’s makeup bag. You can make a shade of pink that’s perfect for your complexion by either using micas or by blending white clay or zinc oxide with the natural red colorant to achieve the shade you desire.

Can your Lipstick be Waterproof naturally?

I know this might come as unpleasant news to you but unfortunately, natural, homemade lipsticks can’t be waterproofed. Waterproofing would mean using certain silicones or copolymers/acrylates, which are a health hazard. If you used these, it’d beat the entire purpose of making lipsticks at home—they’d no longer be safe and 100% natural.

And that’s a wrap! Hopefully, you’re now convinced to make the switch to homemade lipsticks.

    Hi everybody,

I tried it non vegan way and it worked. 🙂 I used the same amount of beeswax to substitute the waxes Eve has used. I used grapeseed oil instead of camelia one, it is a cheaper option. I just saw a video last week how most of the micas available on the market are sourced unethically, by poor children in India. They risk their lives in mica mines, many of them died..It is very sad ☹ For this recipe therefore I ordered ethically sourced mica, it is a bit more expensive, but even the tiniest pot will be enough for many lipsticks
My lipstick came out perfect, it unmolded ok, only think that worries me are lines on the surface (on the sides) of my lipstick. Anybody any ideas on how can I prevent these?
Thank you for your recipe Eve! For people who don’t have an access to rice bran or other waxes and want to stay vegan I would say to use carnauba wax and maybe experiment with it’s ratio together with castor oil + other oils and butters.

Hi I wanted to ask one question. I’m planning to make some organic lipstick with beeswax, shea butter, sunflower oil (because i don’t want vco) and mica powder for the pigment. I’m making it for a business but I’m worrying about the texture. I want it to be matte. What should I do to make it matte? Thanks. 🙂

Can I use a lipgloss tube Instead of a lipstick tube for this ? I’m trying to start a business and deliver it around the country . The temperature is quite high here and I fear that it would melt out of the stick before reaching the destination

I would love to make a pink lipstick. Where can I find what I need to change the color? Most websites say their product is good for lip balm but only pigments say good for lipsticks and balm. I love red but it shows up my imperfect teeth too much so I usually skip the lipstick. Thanks.

Hi, could I replace the rice bran wax with beeswax? Would that work?

    • January 13, 2018 / 7:04 pm

Hi Maya, it would work but would totally change the texture of the lipstick, it would be like a lip balm instead.

      • February 2, 2018 / 3:30 pm

I’m using 2 wax’s Canedilla was and beez wax and jojoba oil and castor and mines is coming out very think and shinny I want it to come on to lips more thick and stay on longer I can wipe it right off after and have a little hint of color on them like it’s oil any suggestions I really want to succeed with this

        • February 4, 2018 / 5:22 pm

You got to follow the exact recipe as above, there is a reason why I use 3 different waxes including rice bran wax and carnauba wax in addition to candelilla wax.
If you change the recipe, it will not have the same texture as my lipstick.

  16. Alex

Hello. Can i make it only with beeswax and carnauba? Also, can i use sunflower oil instead of camellia?

    • January 2, 2018 / 2:48 am

hi alex, that will change the recipe so not sure how it will turn out, try and let me know.
You can substitute sunflower oil instead of camelia but for the wax, it will change the texture.

      • Alex
        January 13, 2018 / 5:31 pm

Thank you. Just one more question. How long does it lasts on the lips? Also, why castor oil and not olive oil for example? Which ingredients make the lipstick long lasting? Can i use corn starch for example? Maybe its a silly question.

        • January 13, 2018 / 6:55 pm

Hi alex, my lipstick is long lasting, about 4-6 hours. If you eat, you will need to re-apply of course like any other lipstick.
Castor oil makes it shiny and thick, I would not use olive oil or it will change the texture (but you can always try and let us know!).
          No need to use cornstarch.

Hi Eve 🙂 I’ve made my own lipsticks before with beeswax and olive oil, and the lipsticks turned out quite moisturising, but leaves marks on my glass after every sip and will be totally gone after a meal. Could you share with me which ingredients in your recipe makes the lipstick last long? Or does it have to be this exact combination of all these different kinds of waxes and oil? Thanks in advance!

    Best wishes,
    Jean

    • December 18, 2017 / 12:15 am

the combination of the wax (carnauba, rice bran and candelilla) makes the correct texture. I am unsure if you remove one if it will have the same long-lasting effect, I have not tested yet. But you can try!

Hello Eve, i did the organic lipstick in the color blue I use mica but the color didn’t show and it so soft like lip gloss I’m looking to make matte organic lipstick.

    • December 1, 2017 / 6:20 pm

Strange! did you use the exact quantities in the recipe above?
And I would not think blue would work, how much mica did you use?
For a matte lipstick, the recipe needs to be modified and you need to the castor oil as it makes it shiny. Will post a matte lipstick recipe soon.

Is this a drying formula? Most lipsticks I get dry out my lips and make them chapped. I made a lip balm this evening using coconut oil & colorant and I like this because it isn’t drying. But I want to make a lipstick that isn’t drying.

    • November 24, 2017 / 3:35 pm

HI Sylvia, this lipstick is not drying, on the contrary, it is moisturizing. Some lipsticks are drying because they include chemicals.

Hi I loved reading this. Thank you for sharing this. Can you please let me know what are the preservatives that can be added in the lipstick?

no preservatives needed. This blog is about all natural and organic recipes where no chemicals are added.

    • Tamara
      May 31, 2017 / 7:35 pm

Seeing as there’s no water in the recipe, you can substitute a preservative (that is essential for water-containing products) for a small amount of vitamin E or Rosemary antioxidant to help prevent the product going rancid 🙂 just a few drops of each will do the trick.

oh, thanks for the reply 🙂
anw, if I dont have rice bran wax (bcause it’s really hard to find it here) I could use carnauba wax, so the amount should be: 2tsp carnauba wax and 1tsp candelilla wax for this recipe? bcause I have all the ingredients except rice bran wax.
ah and I just have mica powder in hand, what amount should I put?
and for the liquid lipstick/lip gloss recipe, how if i want a matte result?

        • May 6, 2017 / 1:52 pm

Hi Fierna, yes you can replace the rice bran wax with carnauba, use 2tsp carnauba wax and 1tsp candelilla wax. It may change the consistency of the lipstick tho so you will have to test!
For mIca, blend 1 additional teaspoon of camelia seed oil with 1 teaspoon of red imperial mica. This would make it a homemade vegan lipstick.
For matte results, I am actually working on a different recipe so stay tune 🙂

        March 21, 2017 / 4:23 am

        Hello.
I am using about 8% of mica in the formula for red color. It is ok. But other light color such as pink then it is not enough. Some people use 20% of mica powder. Is it ok?
I observe that too much mica powder it cannot dissolve in.

Hi Anh, I’ve never tried 20% but if other recipe do it, I would give it a chance with a small batch! Let me know how it turns out.

    Hi Eve,

I am severely allergic to castor oil – is this necessary to use in the recipe?

What would be a suitable substitute for Rice Bran Wax?

Hi can you help me. I followed the recipe and chose to use mica instead of carmine. However the lipstick feels very moisture but does not give any colour on the lips. What am I missing?

    • January 14, 2017 / 3:39 pm

Hi Josie, I suggest you use red iron oxyde and mix it with your mica to get the shade you want. Carmine has very strong covering properties and if you only use mica you may not achieve the results you are looking for.

Hi everyone! I made the lipstick and I loved the color, but the lipstick itself was very hard to apply. Do you have any tips to make it softer?
    Thank you!

Hello, I wanted to know how can I make this lipstick mixture to be creamy in a way that I can apply it with my fingers instead of putting it in a lipstick case.

        • February 11, 2017 / 11:05 pm

HI Lena, you will have to increase the amount of oil and decrease the amount of wax to make it like a balm.

Looks great! Do you premix your 1 tsp carmine powder with the 1 tsp camellia seed oil that you have listed at the bottom of the of the ingredients list or do you premix it with a separate 1 tsp camellia seed oil than what you have listed in the recipe; and then add that to your melted rice, carnauba, and candelilla waxes, shea butter, and castor oil? I just want to make sure I understand before I try making it. Just didn’t know if I’m supposed to have a total of 2 tsp camellia seed oil measured and use one for premixing the carmine and the other tsp melted in the waxes? Thank you for sharing your formula. <3

hi eve!! i love to make beuty products, but right next to your engridients you put %, ile 10% or 20%. can i just ignor those? what does it mean??

    • December 18, 2016 / 5:38 pm

Hi Diane, the 10% means it is the ratio of the percentage of the ingredient used – this can help you in case you want to play with the recipe and make substitutions. glad you enjoy the recipe, pls share the results with us!

What would be a proper sustitute for the camellia seed oil please? I have everything but that to make it. Please help. Would avocado oil or T50 vit e work well for a sub? Any help will be most appreciated. Thank you for sharing your formula. I have been researching formulas and have already ordered boron nitride, silica microspheres, and magnesium stearate although they aren’t organic.

    • December 18, 2016 / 5:49 pm

Hi Cynthia, you could use grapeseed oil, almond oil or avocado oil. let me know how it turns out!

      Hi ligny,

Sorry I had a typo, I have a little of dyslexia from time to time and wrote “tps” instead of “tsp”, thank for noticing!!
      tsp: teaspoon
      Tbs: tablespoon

      hope this helps!

May I ask, is the natural color used here derived from the crushed and processed bodies of the cochineal insect, effectively making this a not a vegan friendly recipe?

    • April 10, 2016 / 10:58 pm

Hi Deb! Yes you are correct, if you want to make this lipstick recipe vegan, then you would need to use natural iron oxyde instead and dilute it in 1 tsp of camellia seed oil.
