Making homemade toothpaste is cost-effective, easy and works just as well (if not better) than natural store-bought toothpaste. I’ve created this natural toothpaste recipe with white clay and peppermint essential oil. Creating beauty and self-care products yourself is an excellent way to control the ingredients (and the toxins!) that you expose your system too.
It follows then, that toothpaste, which you ingest a bit of no matter what with each use, should be a high priority item for creating your own homemade products.
I am sure why it took me so long to share this natural toothpaste recipe it with you but in any case, I hope it was worth the wait!
Why its better to make your own natural toothpaste recipe?
DIY toothpaste uses inexpensive, effective and toxin-free ingredients like xylitol and bentonite clay to polish the surface of the tooth and remove build-up and residue between teeth. At-home recipes allow you to control the quality of ingredients that you put into your mouth and also prevent you from ingesting unwanted chemicals.
As an added bonus, you can customize your homemade toothpaste with xylitol to suit your unique taste buds!
Commercial toothpaste are dangerous for your health
It’s strange to think that a product that everybody uses once, twice or more times a day could be detrimental to your health – but the truth is that commercial toothpaste brands are loaded with toxic ingredients. Because your mouth is highly absorbent, these chemicals get into your bloodstream quickly.
Common ingredients found in store-bought toothpaste are triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, and diethanolamine – just to name a few. Triclosan is an antibacterial agent added to toothpaste to prevent plaque build-up and gingivitis. Sounds good, right? Wrong, because triclosan has been linked to cancer, can help create antibiotic-resistance and can also disrupt your endocrine system.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is another known endocrine-disruptor that can lead to unwanted weight gain, irregular menstrual cycles, and issues such as chronic fatigue. Surprisingly for something that we use in our mouths, SLS is also a registered insecticide!
Propylene glycol is a skin, eye and lung irritant that is also used in antifreeze, and diethanolamine is a known endocrine disruptor that has also been linked to stomach, liver and bladder cancers.
These are just a few of the toxic ingredients that find their way into commercial toothpaste!
Natural ingredients to make your own homemade toothpaste
Clearly, store-bought brands come with some health risks, so why not make your own natural toothpaste recipe? You can make a great homemade toothpaste alternative with natural ingredients like white clay, xylitol and peppermint essential oil.
White clay or also called Kaolin clay is an absorbent, mineral-rich clay often used in toothpaste. It is mined all over the world and helps to pull impurities out of the gums and areas surrounding teeth. As an added benefit, white clay has traditionally been used to help aid digestion, so if you swallow some of it, no harm will be done! I like to use A.Vogel clays which are extracted from ancient sea floor deposits and contain natural minerals and trace elements. They are 100% natural, without additives or preservatives.
Bentonite clay is similar to white clay, but it is made from the ash around volcanoes. It is slightly more absorbent than white clay and has natural antibacterial properties. It helps to detoxify heavy metals and removes unhealthy substances from the teeth and gums.
Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from plant alcohols, most often from corncobs and birch trees. It not only helps to bring a sweet taste to natural toothpaste but naturally disinfects the mouth from bacteria that can lead to tooth decay.
Peppermint essential oil is a plant oil derived from peppermint leaves, and is often added to natural homemade toothpaste, in part for its flavor, but also for its purifying benefits! Peppermint oil is naturally antiseptic, has a cooling effect on the mouth and also freshens breath.
Coconut oil is derived from the kernel of coconuts and is a natural antiseptic, antifungal oil that can be used in toothpaste to create more of traditional toothpaste consistency. Coconut oil also works to combat bacteria that cause tooth decay.
Baking soda is a chemical compound made up of sodium bicarbonate and has been used as a cleansing agent for at least two hundred years. Baking soda is mildly abrasive, so as its rubbed against your teeth, it gently removes plaque and polishes your teeth.
