For all the coco nuts out there, I’ve created this easy coconut oil lip balm recipe DIY, Step By Step recipe you can create right in your kitchen!
Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturiser and softener.
I am also using castor oil in this coconut oil lip balm recipe to add extra shine but you could use another liquid carrier oil like safflower oil or olive oil if you wanted something less shiny.
Beeswax is what will make your lip balm harden so don’t skip this ingredient… Add some peppermint essential oil for a “fresh like” sensation which is to say the least… ideal in the summer!
If you choose refined coconut oil, it will not have the lovely coconut scent, opt in for the virgin non refined coconut oil; always organic please!

- Gather all the ingredients and add the beeswax, castor oil and coconut oil in a double boiler or a pan filled with water. You will need 6 to 8 lip balm containers for this recipe.
- Once melted, add the essential oil if desired and mix well.
- Pour the liquid wax in the lip balm containers and fill them to the top. If it has already starting to harden, don’t panic! Put it back into the double boiler for a few seconds until it melts again and pour the rest in the lip balm containers.
- Wait one hour or two until the wax starts to harden then you can use the lip balm right away! If it is a hot day, you can pop the lip balm containers in the fridge so the lip balm hardens more quickly.

PS: if you wonder how to clean the mess in the double boiler, the easiest way is to wipe the reminding oil inside the pan with a paper towel, then it will be much easier to wash as most of the grease is gone. (you’re welcome!)

Hello Eve, I just got all the ingredients for this recipe delivered at home, but unfortunately, the beeswax is unrefined. Will it affect the shelflife and quality of lip balm or should I buy a new batch of refined beeswax?

Thank you for such an accurate DIY recipe, I just made a batch of 12 lip balms following this recipe. I substituted lip balm tubes with small lip balm tin containers and mixed in a little bit of beetroot powder to add tint to the lip balms. Shirley, which lotion you are trying to make? pls post the link. If you want a softer consistency, then use more oil like safflower (not coconut).
Or use Shea Butter for part of the cocoa butter?

Hi Eve, I just tried the recipe and I am amazed how easy it is. The balm came out pretty awesome :))) Do you think I can melt the balm after it already hardened and fill it in other containers (bought the wrong containers but was in the process already) or will it loose its quality?

HI Nandini, yes! you can use mica or natural coloring to your lip balm but its going to give you a tinted lip balm and not a lipstick.

Hi Cherry, yes! you can use almond oil, jojoba oil. It will make your lip balm less thick so add a bit of wax to compensate! I will try to make a recip without coconut oil in the future, stay tuned 🙂
Please help. I tried to make this recipe but when the wax was still liquid and it all begin to droop from the lip balm conteiner. I tried pouring when it waz already getting cold. Balm looked nice but i had problems with containers ( balm can not move up and down in the container). What do you think coupe be the problemm? I tried with two different tipes of conteiners and it sad the same.

Hi Zery, You need to pour the wax when it still warm and liquid, otherwise it will not pour properly. Simply put it back on the double boiler until it is liquid and pour into containers immediately.
What is the shelf life of this please? Does it need refrigeration?
