If you are looking for an easy coconut oil body butter recipe like body shop but without the chemicals, you have come to the right place!  You can whip this homemade coconut oil body butter recipe in max 20 minutes in your kitchen. It’s a great body butter to fight against dry and flaky skin.

I’ve used shea butter, cooa buttersunflower oil and of course organic coconut oil.

Coconut Oil Body Butter Recipe

Instead of crappy chemical fragrances used by Body shop, I’ve used organic essential oils. You can always skip the essential oils if you prefer to make an unscented homemade coconut body butter, that’s totally up to you!

Last but not least, this is a vegan coconut oil body butter recipes as it contains no beeswax. I have used carnauba wax instead.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Acting as a carrier oil or vehicle for the body butter, coconut oil is in a solid state at 76 degrees and melts when applied to the skin. It makes a perfect ingredient for any body butter recipe. It is also known for its antimicrobial and moisturizing properties which keep the skin nourished.

Benefits of Shea Butter

Shea Butter is a fat that is derived from the nut of the African shea tree and has a faint yellow color and nutty smell when it is unrefined. It contains vitamins F, A and E along with essential fatty acids that provide intense moisture and hydration to the skin. It also has a natural SPF factor which protects skin from harmful effects of the sun.

Benefits of Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is a fat acquired from the  cacao bean pod and has a creamy texture and yellow color. Since it is an amazing thickening agent, it is useful in maintaining the texture of your body butter recipe. It contains high amounts of vitamin E and antioxidants which nourish and hydrate the skin while protecting it from signs of aging.

Benefits of Sunflower Oil

Since coconut oil tends to solidify at colder temperatures, we need to add another carrier oil to have a silky texture to your body butter.  I have chosen sunflower oil because it is cost efficient, practically unscented and has moisturizing and skin conditioning properties. It is also high in vitamin E which helps prevent sun damage and skin irritation.

Coconut Oil Body Butter Recipe

Why should you spend time (20 min) making your own body butter?

Reason 1:

You are assured that all the ingredients of your body butter are organic, all-natural and safe for your skin.

Reason 2:

When you make your own body butter, you can find a way on how to make body butter less greasy and can customize it to your own liking.

Reason 3:

It will save you money! That’s most especially true if you plan on giving the body butter as gifts to your friends and family.

Reason 4:

It saddens me that body shop claim to offer natural body beauty products where they are indeed full of chemical ingredients. Make your own body butter recipe and stop giving money to multinational that do not care about your health and are only there for the money. Plus body shop is now owned by L’oreal and they do animal testing.

Also, I noticed something a bit amusing is that the coconut oil body butter, the cocoa body butter while they have different names and different packaging, they have pretty much the same ingredient list. The only difference is the fragrance… the coconut oil body butter contains the following chemicals:

How harmful is the coconut oil body butter sold by Body Shop?

The coconut oil body butter contains the following chemicals:

  • Butylphenyl Methylpropional Lilial: is a synthetic scent ingredient; associated with allergies and contact dermatitis. Possible human immune system toxicant or allergen, Persistent or bioaccumulative and moderate to high toxicity concern in humans, Associated with endocrine disruption.

Such a great easy recipe I can’t wait to make it. From my experience with other recipes using the same ingredients I tend to notice that the cream hardens when it sets even if I whip it. What can I add to make it soft ?
    Thank you.

Hi Eve!! Thank You for posting this Beautiful recipe!! I bought all the ingredients & everything is printed out. I have one question. I have done a LOT of homework my self & want to give it a sea/ beachy scent. I’ve purchased all of the oils that can do that giving it a ” marine”, “Burnt sand”, ” aqua water”, Bernoulli “, & “cedar wood” scent as most of my products including candles revolves around The Beachy Theme that I love so much & am inspired by My BESTFRIEND, MY BEAUTIFUL MOTHER CYNDI who passed away too soon & could & can’t cope w/ her recent passing. I believe she put all of this in my lap from Heaven above watching me Literally die of a broken heart. All my pain, sadness and energy goes into what I do as I am a very creative person. In your opinion, what is the best EO’S to create that smell that I’m TRYING to create. Much Love! Deborah

I really need help trying to achieve the ” marine”, “sea” , Beach scent as there are several notes that go into that. I bought what I could find after doing some research as Eternal essence Essential oils & others DO NOT carry those “real sea notes” & can I also as Argon oil to the recipe as it absorbs quickly not leaving that greasiness to the whipped mango body butter? I know arrowroot does that as well, but argon oil is wonderful for the skin. Please help!?

It’s a Beautiful recipe. Easy to make. But I don’t just want coconut/vanilla scented butters as Am all about that beach smell you would get from IKG BEACH Hair volumizer or Very Sexy Sea perfume OR Victoria Secret Pink coco coco body spray. What essential oil notes would you recommend to get something close to a beach scent???? ThankYou,

Is it ok to use plastic jars instead of glass. How can I get rid of the gritty feel – do I need to whisk it for longer?

    • March 3, 2021 / 3:18 pm

For plastic jar, sure you can use them but glass is best!

    • Deborah D.
      February 17, 2022 / 8:20 pm

I would not use plastic jars as they have chemicals in them that over time could damage your product
Glass is the way to go.

I love the body butter but it feels a bit gritty – do you think I should have whisked it for longer? Or maybe I whisked it for too long…

Some natural skin and lip care products I’ve purchased end up with a rancid oil smell. I was reluctant to try making my own because I really dislike that smell. Some people don’t notice it but I have a very sensitive sence of smell and that ruins it for me. What would a natural preservative be, or is something in this recipe already a natural preservative? Also, can I add monoi oil somewhere in this as just an addition or a substitute? I really like the smell.

    • September 12, 2020 / 11:30 pm

you could replace coconut oil by monoi.
natural product should not smell rancid, if they do its because they are expired.
There is no need for preservatives here since there is no water content.

This recipe has a perfect texture for me to put in an airless push container. These containers are perfect for keeping the body butter uncontaminated and easily dispensed. There was a very good choice of containers on the site you recommended, as well.
Back to the texture-again, perfect. I sifted the arrowroot in for oily texture control. It was effective. I plan on adding a hint of color once I hone in on the way it smells. I pinned the recipe to my body butters. Thank you.

    • August 14, 2020 / 3:49 pm

awesome! thanks for sharing your feedback Pamela 🙂

Eve, thank you for your very generous sharing. You seem to be a very caring person. Please don’t change 😉
Do you have or will you be developing spot treatment recipes? I need something for my forehead wrinkles and my very aging saggy eyelids!! I seem to have triple eyelids ;O !! Thank you Eve.

Totally agree about the body shop. I make my own products and use them in my treatments. When i first started looking into cleansing balms i could not belive their ingredients. And how people believe they are so natural. Its great for people to have informative blogs on the benefits of DIY prodcuts x

I’am so excited to make the recipe in a couple of hours. In the meantime, I’ve been trying to understand dilution chart of essential oils. What i knew so far that %2 dilution is recommended for body butters. If i base this recipe, i would use much more than 13 drops of essential oils. Is that right? Or did i do something wrong?

Thank you for this recipe. It turned out great!
I’m wondering if it is good for the face as well. I normally just use coconut oil mixed with a few eo’s. I’ve been hesitant to try cocoa butter on my face because I’ve read it can cause acne/clog pores

      March 16, 2023 / 11:45 am

I use coconut oil in my facial products and have not had a problem with acne or clogging. Everyone is different though so as with a lot of products it may be something you have to figure out on your own.

Does this turn out solid or creamy like pictures? I’ve made other body butters and they were solids then turned directly into oil on skin. I’m hoping for something in the creamy range!

    Hi eve,

I was wondering what the difference is like with and without adding wax to home made body butter recipes?

    Thanks!

    • January 29, 2019 / 11:02 pm

Hi Jessica, it changes the texture with the beeswax and helps it to solidify. Without beeswax, it may melt more easily but it also could feel less greasy.

Hi, I don’t have sunflower oil could I substitute it for another oil or multiple oils?

    • October 30, 2018 / 6:10 pm

Yes, you could substitute for safflower oil, apricot kernel oil or almond oil but understand this will change the texture of the recipe slightly.

    Dear Eve

Thank you for the amazing recipe. Please guide me on the organic butter below

Im making a body butter for scars and stretch marks please advise on the the ratio for the following ingredients in a 250g container

    Shea butter
    Cocoa butter
    Mango butter
    Jojoba oil
    Rosehip oil
    Boabab

    Thank you in advance

    • March 15, 2018 / 5:39 pm

Hi Sbonga, that’s an entire new recipe so I would have to test it. Ballpark, you could try 40% butter and 60% oils.
Rosehip oil is expensive, I would only use it on the face.

    Hi,

Mine came out runny. What is the consistency supposed to be like? Do I need to blend it for longer?

    • November 13, 2017 / 5:02 pm

Hi Michelle, if your room temperature is above 25C, it can be a bit runny because that is the coconut oil melting point.
If you want a more solid coconut body butter, increase the amount of shea butter and cocoa butter.

Hi Eve, do you have any problems with your product concerning the coconut oil in warm and cold weather?

    • October 7, 2017 / 5:05 pm

Hi tayla, there is no problem but it can affect the consistency, if its more than 23 degrees, keep the body butter in the fridge.

Can I use coconut oil, Shea butter and peppermint oil? Will that be ok. Also what can I add to it to lighten up my skin.

    • October 7, 2017 / 5:06 pm

thats a different recipe entirely, you can try it. Peppermint oil is not ideal for a body butter unless you want to have a cooling effect.

Hi there do u need the shea butter or can you use something else as it is hard to fined

    • September 5, 2017 / 5:19 pm

Hi Kilie, you can replace the shea butter by mango butter or cocoa butter but it will be a different texture than shea butter. You may have to adjust the ratio oil and butter.

Does this need to stay in the fridge? how long will it last? is there a natural preservative that can be added?

    • August 26, 2017 / 2:38 am

No need to keep in the fridge, no need for preservatives. It last 6 months to a year depending on what is the shelf life of the oils and butter you are using.

Thank you eve for this recipe sounds amazing. I did a list of body shop ingredients and it is appalling the chemicals that are used and affect the body in so many ways that are bad for us. I’m all for non toxic products in my home and making them yourself you know what goes into them making a joy to use.

  33. July 2, 2017 / 12:30 pm

I’m curious as to the scent it will emit through the use of the 3 specific essential oils you have listed in the recipe.
