This cocoa butter lotion recipe contains no beeswax and is easily done whipped. Cocoa Butter is naturally rich in Vitamin E as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals. Vitamin E helps to soothe, hydrate, and balance the skin and also provides the skin collagen which assists with wrinkles and other signs of aging. It is a rich body butter perfect for dry skin and for preventing stretch marks.

For this cocoa butter lotion recipe, if you would like the chocolate scent, make sure you buy unrefined cocoa butter, the refined version will loose its yummy natural chocolate scent!

  • To make this cocoa butter lotion recipe, add the cocoa butter and camellia seed oil to your double boiler on low heat until they are melted.
  • Once melted, take it off the heat, add the tablespoon of aloe vera and the silk protein (optional) and start whipping with an electric mixer for two minutes.

    Hi Eve,

What is the purpose of the protein powder here? Is it to thicken or make the cream less greasy? Can corn starch be substituted? Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Hi zenah, its optional but silk protein helps with moisture and smoothness. It also brings a shimmering quality that brings radiance to the skin.

    Hey Eve!

I bought unrefined raw cocoa butter but it is too hard (even at room temp) to scoop “tablespoons” of. I have a weight scale so is there a equivalent in grams that I can use?

    • December 10, 2018 / 1:21 am

Hey Matthew! I suggest you grate it with a microplane or simply put it in a fash blender (like ninja or vitamix). That will be more accurate than me trying to figure out a weight.

Hi Eve, i have just found your website whilst looking for a recipe for cocoa butter moisturising cream, and I was curious if I could substitute the camillia seed oil or safflower oil for coconut oil or rice bran oil and if I could which would be preferable?

    • November 19, 2018 / 3:31 pm

Hi, if you change the oils it will change the texture of the recipe. Rice bran oil is a slow absorbing oil and will make the lotion heavier. Coconut oil has a low melting point and average speed skin absorption. You could always experiment but be away it will change the recipe end results!

    Hi There!

I am going to do this with camellia, cacao butter, aloe vera and blue tansy! I have eczema and blue tansy is a life saver. I would also like to add some shea butter. Instead of 4 tbsp of cacao, could I do 2 tbsp of cacao and 2 tbsp of shea, or would you recommend a different ratio?

    Thanks!
    Sarah

    • October 22, 2018 / 6:41 pm

Hi Sarah, yes you can do 50/50 shea butter cocoa butter as you mentioned. Just understand it will change the texture of the recipe but it should work out just fine.

    Hey there,

can i make this with 3 ingredients only?
cocoa butter, olive oil and lavender essential oil.

    • June 6, 2018 / 4:49 pm

I don’t recommend using olive oil for body lotion as it will be way too greasy. Best to stick to my recipe above for best results.

    Hi Eve,

I just bought online all ingredients you mentioned above and I hope it will work. This morning I read wife’s cream compund and I ”freaked out”! So somehow I came to your website, and got surprised how easy it is to make a natural body cream. So I decided to give it a go!

Many Thanks for such a nice and precise making decription.

    God bless you,

        Hi Eve,

on friday was the second time I made this lotion, and it came out very good, like on your picture. Just it hardens a bit after few hours, but it quickly melts down. We are very happy with it anyways. 🙂

Do you have some other recipe, more like a thicker cream with cocoa butter?

Keep up the good work Eve! I believe many will find this website useful. Also, do you know any natural addons to extend the shelf life?

        Cheers

        • March 18, 2018 / 4:25 pm

@sava thank you!! if you want a ticker cream more like a butter, you would do 50% cocoa butter 50% oil. Hope this helps 🙂

        Hi Eve,
My father was pharmacist and he made lotions with high water contain ( 75% H2O or more) . Can you recommend me some natural emulsifier to increase the water containt.

        • August 23, 2018 / 6:25 pm

Hi Laszlo, unfortunately there are no 100% natural emulsifier that will hold 75 water content. You would need to use Glyceryl Stearate and you would also need to add preservatives. So in the end your cream will not be 100% natural 🙁

Dear Eve, i love to add aloe vera in almost everything and wanted to use more than 1 tbsp mainly because i need this to have the consistency of lotion. Will it work?

    • October 14, 2017 / 8:24 pm

Hi Ify, if you change the ratio hydrosol/oil it will change the recipe. Its hard to make a lotion with beeswax because you need to use more hydrosol/aloe vera and the emulsion will not hold more. But you can try and let me know!

Thanks. Another thing. I have tried to make a butter with aloe vera gel(plant), it didn’t last at all. I just noticed that you use lily of the desert. Their product contains potassium sorbate(inhibits mold) and citric acid(to balance the pH). It’s one of the reasons your emulsions last longer i think. Are you aware?

        • October 18, 2017 / 11:51 pm

Hi Ify, yes I use the aloe juice from lily desert that has citric acid, it helps with preservation. The gel has potassium sorbate so I don’t like using it!

        August 29, 2019 / 6:50 pm

I put a teaspoon of beeswax and it came out lovely 🙂 I omitted the aloe vera because I didn’t have it on hand.

Please don’t hate me…but, I also added a tablespoon of artificially flavored vanilla! The vanilla has a preservative in it…it’s food grade, so…

It was my first time making a lotion like this LOL. Only my 3rd DIY butter concoction…in 2 days. I’m on a roll…Now, that I have it…the chocolate smell is so delicious and wafting that I did not need to add any extra flavorings or even essential oils!

I then put it in the fridge…you say nothing about refrigeration so I am taking it out. It’s not a huge batch so I am thinking that using it every evening after my nighttime shower I should use it up within 2-3 weeks.

        I love it!

It sounds lovely! I don’t see where the water is used in the instructions.

    • June 30, 2017 / 4:57 pm

Hi Claire, thanks for your comment! I removed the “water phase” mention since it was confusing, you just need to use Aloe vera for this recipe, no water!

  15. September 16, 2016 / 5:11 pm

Thank you for posting your wonderful recipes. This particular recipe has on a 2 month expiry on it. Is there a natural preservative that can be added to extend the life of the cream? Would not be able to sell to others with such a short time span on it. Any ideas? Thanks! Colleen

    • September 25, 2016 / 11:08 pm

Hi Colleen, Use this cream within 1 to max 2 months, its always best to make small batches of creams. Because there is aloe vera, its best to keep it in the fridge.
Essential oils and vitamin E as well as grapeseed extract help lengthening the shelve life but I personally don’t recommend using other preservatives as they are chemicals and not natural.
Make small batch of cream. or make body butters without water nor aloe vera and that will extend the shelf life to 6 month to a year.
